On the 17th of February of 2007, 10 p.m., the fueler «Prometheus» took the ground in conditions of storm wind and high wave in Novorossiysk when attempting to anchor north of cape Pinay. More than a thousand ton of petroleum products were on board the ship.
Rescue operation started at first light of the 18th of February under the general control of P.А. Zakharchenko, the captain of port Novorossiysk. Initially the accident site was visited by divers who measured the depths around the ship in distress. Then the fleet of Novorossiysk Commercial Sea Port started to act and sent one tanker and three tow boats to the area of the accident. In all, six ships participated in «Prometheus» rescue operation.
Due to strong northeast wind, gust of which reached 25 meters per second, and existing risk of potential damage of «Prometheus»'s hull, the decision was taken to unload diesel fuel from the fueler to reduce the soil-bearing load.
About 11 a.m. of 18.02.2007 filigree lashing of tanker «Maslovoz-1» to the board of «Prometheus» was done using «Utrish» tow boat. After unloading of 100 ton of fuel, about 3 p.m. the fueler refloated and left the bank. «Prometheus» arrived to the port under its own power accompanied by «Boiki» tow boat of the port's fleet.
All services of Novorossiysk port operated clearly, consistently and very professionally in heavy weather conditions. As a result of the rescue mission there were no injures and environment pollutions.
